More people can buy from you

According to the World Health Organization, about 1.3 billion people, or 16% of the world's population, live with a significant disability. Add older adults, people using their phone in bright sunlight or with one hand. A site that's hard to read or navigate leaves all of these people out, and they end up buying from a competitor.

What WCAG AA is

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are the international standard for digital accessibility. Level AA is the most widely adopted and covers the essentials: enough contrast between text and background, full keyboard navigation, alt text on images, forms with clear labels and a consistent heading structure.

Accessibility and SEO go hand in hand

Much of what makes a site accessible also helps Google understand it: a single H1 per page, a clear heading hierarchy, alt text describing images and links whose text says where they lead. Accessibility is not a direct ranking factor on its own, but these practices make content clearer for people and for search engines.

Five checks to do today

1. Contrast: normal text needs at least 4.5:1 against the background; large text, 3:1.

2. Keyboard: try navigating the site using only Tab and Enter. Every button must be reachable and show where the focus is.

3. Images: every image that conveys information needs alt text.

4. Headings: use a single H1 and organize sections with H2 and H3, without skipping levels.

5. Motion: respect people who set their system to reduce animations.
